“The goal of education is not to increase the amount of knowledge but to create the possibilities for a child to invent and discover, to create men who are capable of doing new things.”
-Jean Piaget
The soul purpose of my ePortfolio is to show, whoever is interested, a little bit more about me. I am currently furthering my education in order to be able to do new things. This portfolio is a perfect vessel to showcase examples of my work, work ethic, and how my mind performs. A representation of myself is displayed throughout my Wix website.
From the beginning, I have a small blurb about yours truly. I chose a picture of myself on-campus and the Norfolk skyline for the bottom to show how current and up to date my site is. I wrote about my current education status and what I plan to do with my education.
Next, I then follow up with an extensive resume. The aspect of the resume page I appreciate most is how much I can actually put on it. Most paper resumes you turn into a potential job are limited to only a page. On my resume, I have the link to my Wix site so they can see all of the things pertaining to why I should be hired or selected.
On going, individuals may select to go on my projects and blog pages. These give personal insight on who I am professionally and as a writer. The fact that samples of my work are just a click away blows my mind. The easy accessibility of this provides more than what I could just “say” in an interview.
Being viewed as “professional” is important in this day and age. People use technology multiple times within their day. A status update, tweet, and latest blog post can define who you are as a person. My Wix site is a tool I can use to represent myself as a hardworking student who is willing and ready to start a new task.
Ensuing, minor challenges were also met while creating my site. The way I may want to format something could seem jumbled. Learning how to limit what I display on my site was my main issue. I could go on for a long period of time trying to get you to know me- while I should just be using my key features of myself. My advice for any future students is to KEEP IT SIMPLE. I had my basis for my current Wix site from a previous literature class.
Within that course, I had less strict guidelines. This left the door open for myself to do anything I wanted. Looking back at my previous format, I appreciate the way my current professor suggested my site to be. At first, every page had a different color scheme. Some backgrounds had movement, while others were one solid color. My current professor showed me that this was confusing and distracting. I have recently changed it so every page has the same background with a coordinated color scheme and matching font. This made it so my information was more easily read and uniform. Most successful websites are actually formatted this way, and your Wix site should be the same!
As for my views on communication, I am and will be forever interested. In the beginning of the semester, I had planned to minor in communications. My newfound passion is to learn how people interact with others. It happens all the time around us and online. Verbal and non-verbal communication allow for certain cues to be expressed and pick up by others. My research paper was on the Communication Theory and Gender communication. This led to my educational plan of taking the higher-level Communication Theory class and Group Communication class offered at Old Dominion University. The way individuals accommodate to others for understandings to be met is one of my new interests. This will also help myself later in life when I try to relay information to others.
All in all, I have thoroughly enjoyed human communication. It has helped me bond more with my best friend (who is a communications major) and has gotten myself more enthusiastic about furthering my education in communications. The Wix site required for this course has even helped myself get hired at a new job this year! Having something to represent yourself as well as an online site is an essential tool to have in your belt.
